Bright eyes,
seeing the world
for the first time.

Mom and Dad cry
and the family
welcomes you here.

“There’s a lot to look forward to,”
they’ll say.

Plenty of tears you’ll cry.
A great deal of nights you won’t sleep.
Sufficient amounts of days where you’ll feel worthless.

But don’t worry,
“Things will turn up,
things will get better.”

But they don’t get better.
They get worse.
And you’ll feel worse.

But one day,
none of the pain will matter.

Just put a smile on your face,
keep your chin up,
and don’t let them see you cry.

At least for now.
