To the other couples
they looked like any other
on the dance floor
The elegant woman,
draped in a coral wrap,
beads and floral-patterned dress
The distinguished man
in a worn but well-made
charcoal suit
The woman beaming,
seemingly in affection
for her dance and life partner
The man leaning in
and holding her close
from a lifetime of practice
Only if you moved closer
could you hear
their sweet hushed exchange
On my count
you hit the lights,
and I’ll take the jewels
